I. IDEAS FROM ME
Ignore Other People's Opinions
It isn't your business anyway. If you don't know this person, why is their opinion more valuable than yours? Even if you do know them, the same concept holds. As sad and scary as it might sound, you can only rely on yourself to live life at your best. Therefore, don't let other people's opinions control how you live your life and don't give their views more value than your own.
Adopt A Healthy Lifestyle
Enjoying a positive body image does not mean you are at healthy body weight or the next Victoria Secret Runway Model. It's about loving yourself no matter the situation, which is why you should fuel your body appropriately to keep your body well-balanced nutritionally and emotionally.
Live Each Day as If It Is Your Last
Stop occupying your mind with how you look and find what is more important in your life. When you live life like it's your last, you start to focus on friends, experiences, and things that make you feel good and happy more instead.
Stop Comparing Yourself to Others
Every single body is different. You won't achieve others' looks without the right genetics, and that is a beautiful thing. When you fall into this unhealthy habit, find the qualities you admire and compliment them instead of wishing you were like them. Comparison is only draining and wastes valuable time. Use it as motivation to get what you want.
Create A List of Things You Love About Yourself
Document the things you love about yourself. Keep your list somewhere you can come back too. Anytime you feel down, pull this list out and read it aloud. Avoid anything to do with your weight or how you look. Pick the things that give you a strong sense of pride and happiness. This list is an excellent source of motivation to get you back on track.
Fight Negativity with Positivity
Positivity is an emotion that is often easier to talk about than do consistently. Anytime you find yourself thinking negatively, turn it around into something positive, or at the very least focus on neutral thoughts. Dwelling on what you don't like makes them more prominent. Don't allow yourself to do this.
There will be times when you give in to the negativity. You are only human and you need to allow yourself to feel emotions. Just don't let it get in your way of success. Find the right plan for you, or talk to someone to help you get on the right track. Use this as a guide to inspire a positive body to imagine.
II. QUOTES FROM OTHERS
“You are not a mistake. You are not a problem to be solved. But you won’t discover this until you are willing to stop banging your head against the wall of shaming and caging and fearing yourself.”
- Geneen Roth is the author of ten books, including the just-released This Messy Magnificent Life and New York Times bestsellers When Food Is Love, Lost and Found, and Women Food and God, as well as The Craggy Hole in My Heart and the Cat Who Fixed It.
“My body is not yours to critique and discuss. My body is not yours for consumption. My body is my vessel. An archive of experiences. A weapon that has fought battles only I understand. A library of love, pain, struggle, victory, and mystery. Your eyes cannot define all it has endured. Do not place value upon my body, place it upon my being.”
- Sophie Lewis is a theorist, critic and translator living in Philadelphia. She publishes her work—on topics ranging from dating to Donna Haraway—on both scholarly and non-academic platforms, including Boston Review, Viewpoint, Signs, Science as Culture, Jacobin, the New Inquiry, Mute, and Salvage Quarterly.
