How to Live Your Life with Intention

Many people seem to live without having any idea what they’re doing to do from one day to the next. They just let life happen and wind up wherever they wind up. However, this is a very stressful way to live. You can instead create a life of intention, much like when you plan a cross country trip, that even if you have a few interactions and off-road adventures, you’ll still end up in the destination you expected and hoped for.

I. IDEAS FROM ME

Accept That You Always Have Choices

Even if you don’t like the choices before you, you still have them. Anytime you tell yourself you must do something because you have no choice, it’s a lie. The thing you may not have a choice about is the consequences of your actions. However, there is always a choice between things that is all yours to make.

Get to Know Yourself

If you don’t know yourself and what you want from life or what your morals and values are, it’s hard to make choices. It’s hard to live a life of intention if you don’t know how you want to wind up. If you don’t know what success is, or what happiness is for you, you won’t be able to get there.

Learn How to Set Goals

One of the ways you can get better at living with intention is to learn how to set proper goals. The best method for goal setting is the tried and true SMART goal setting method. You can look this up and learn about it and then practice it so that your goals are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely.

Know Your Goals for Your Life in All Areas

Don’t just set goals when it’s obvious. Set the right goals for every part of your life so that you can follow them. For example, where do you want to be in 20 years with your health? You have a lot more control over these things than you might think, and they start with today.

Understand What it Takes to Reach Your Goals

When you set a goal, play it all the way out by starting with the result and working your way back to today to make a daily schedule of what you need to do to reach the outcome you desire. When you know what’s required, you can ensure you have those, and you’ll be more likely to succeed.

Schedule Small Daily Actions That Impact Your Goals

When you get that schedule down to the smallest daily actions that ensure success, every single day is going to be a lot simpler than the big goal might seem on the surface. For example, if you walk just 150 minutes a week between now and 20 years from now, it’s more than likely you’ll meet your health goals than if you waited until the 19th year and started doing it.

Stay Focused and Be Mindful

This is important for all your long-term goals. It’s easy to see the effects of your daily short-term goals, such as keeping organized, exercising, and so forth, but it’s harder to see the point of longer-term goals. Just stay focused on each day and stay mindful of your actions.

Practice Lifelong Learning

The more you know, the better you do in all areas of your life. If you are having issues focusing or doing what you say you want to do, learn more about it. For example, if you want to run a successful business, learn all you can about people who run them.

The thing is, when you know what you want, don’t just wait for it to happen. Instead, figure out what it takes to get there, then do it. You’re going to be so much happier about where you wind up in life if you live your life with intention. When you live and do what you hope to achieve and accomplish, instead of just letting whatever happens to you happen, you end up with even more control and more choices.

II. QUOTE FROM OTHERS

American author, speaker, and pastor who has written many books, primarily focusing on leadership - John C. Maxwell on living life with intention:

“If you live your life with intention of making a difference in others’ lives, your life will be full, not empty.“

American author of numerous books and audio tapes, including five New York Times Best Sellers: Anatomy of the Spirit (1996), Why People Don't Heal and How They Can (1998), Sacred Contracts (2002), Invisible Acts of Power (2004), Entering The Castle (2007) - Carolyn Myss on life with intention and action:

“You cannot change anything in your life with intention alone, which can become a watered-down, occasional hope that you’ll get tomorrow. Intention without action is useless.“

III. QUESTIONS FOR YOU

What are your intentions in life?
How do you see yourself a few years from now?
